Devendra Banhart

at den Atelier Doors: 7:00 pm

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Devendra Banhart truly is the grand high priest of the new weird America-avant-freak-psych-folk movement. He decides exactly who can sing in what ethereal voice when. Banhart is seen as a representative of a group of musicians, mostly Americans, who play variations on folk music and often sing in odd voices about strange things. But – honestly – this guy truly is a genius… Banhart’s idiosyncratic mix of odd folk and warbling emotion and his inspiring tales of romantic ambivalences – his multi-lingual cosmic love songs that simmer with strange imagery, emotions stripped down to the core – are achingly pretty. Banhart looks every inch the Woodstock throwback, bearded, slender and wraith-like. His bandmates have each grown equally impressive facial hair. And this so-called Hairy Fairy Band is blowing up Devendra’s curious folk songs into rock jams that smelt like the inside of a hash pipe.
