The Screaming Trees’ former vocalist Mark Lanegan has by now fairly firmly established himself as a kind of post-grunge/Americana Johnny Cash, with moody songs awash with tales of drug abuse, redemption and dark humour. Singing with a deep, nicotine-ravaged growl that’s rich, strong, and sensuously forbidding, Mark Lanegan has carved out a strong identity of his own – past his fame with The Screaming Trees – as a vocalist and songwriter informed by the blues but willing to take his darkly poetic sensibility wherever his muse was pointing him, from hard rock to electronica. He’s collaborated with the late Kurt Cobain, Josh Homme, PJ Harvey and Greg Dulli in the past, but Mark Lanegan has always stayed truly independent-minded throughout his career.
