Portishead takes just seconds to spook its audience. To this day, Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley remain one of pop music’s most compelling combinations. And it’s not Gibbons’ words that do the damage – it’s how they’re said. Gibbons’ technique surpasses any lyrical content. Dummy, the 1994-debut, is one of the best albums of the 90s. Imitators have come and gone, but no act has reproduced the disquieting magnificence conjured here except Portishead themselves. With merely three releases in 18 years, Bristol's Portishead now make Radiohead look like the Monkees. The band now deals in a kind of psychedelic, post-industrial disjointedness. The cinematic quality of their work remains, as well as their trick of sounding like they come from hellish '60s spy movie. In ten years, you'll still probably be hard pressed to find anything that sounds remotely like Portishead. They’re breathtaking live...
