Introduction

Filthy-mouthed South African rap trio Die Antwoord hit the ‘bourg! The clip for their single Enter The Ninja went viral back in 2010. Vocalists Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er's double act still sounds weird and abrasive in the best possible way, his guttural, Afrikaans-accented rasp clashing compellingly with her helium-voiced flow and DJ Hi-Tek on the decks. If Die Antwoord are a joke, they're a painfully acute one. They purport to represent "zef", a strain of working-class/underclass Boer culture. Watkin Tudor Jones, aka Ninja, has previously appeared in conceptual art-rap projects and situationist pranks while Vi$$er resembles a hyperactive toddler on a sugar rush. The joke has grown, and their shows are rammed with cognoscenti who are in on the trio's ironic vulgarian shtick. Die Antwoord are hilarious indeed!
